It would have been better, of course, if this 1984 production of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, or at least its title role, had been filmed 20 years earlier, when Joan Sutherland’s voice was in its spectacular prime. But like her Canadian Opera Norma, dating from 1981, this is a better-late-than-never documentation of one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century.

Lotfi Mansouri spared no effort or expense in making this production special. He personally directed the staging, and handpicked an outstanding cast (right down to the very young and then-unknown Ben Heppner in the small role of Hervey). The visual elements–sets, costumes, and camera work–are also handled with great care, and Sutherland’s positive response to this dedication can be sensed in her performance as the unfortunate wife of King Henry VIII. James Morris is best-known as a Wagnerian singer–perhaps the leading Wotan of our time–but he is equally at home in many of the villainous roles that are the fate of bass- baritones (Iago, Scarpia, Don Giovanni). In this sinister tale of an innocent woman ruthlessly destroyed, he shows a surprising knack for the bel canto style. Judith Forst is also excellent in the role of Jane Seymour. –Joe McLellan

In God Spoke, Nick Doob and Chris Hegedus (The War Room) shine a light on political satirist Al Franken. The “flaming sword of justice” explains his left-leaning career like this, “They [right-wing pundits] say something ridiculous, and then I subject them to scorn and ridicule.” The filmmakers, longtime associates of cinema verite pioneer DA Pennebaker, take a fly-on-the-wall approach towards Franken’s activities around the time of the 2004 presidential election and afterwards as he explores a run for the US Senate in 2008. They look at the (unsuccessful) lawsuit Fox News filed against him for swiping their tagline, his involvement in the upstart Air America network, and his dust-ups with Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Michael Medved, and Bill O’Reilly, who describes him as “a vile human being.” Along the way, they follow the Minnesota-born comedian on book tours and speaking engagements, occasionally flashing back to his two-decade long stint on Saturday Night Live. God Spoke is an expansion of the Sundance Channel short The First Amendment Project: Fox vs. Franken and covers some of the same ground as HBO’s America Undercover: Left of the Dial. In other words, there isn’t a ton of new material here, but this “fair and balanced” profile represents an entertaining introduction to a multi-talented individual. Without Franken, it’s hard to imagine a place in the world for The Daily Show and other media designed to expose “lies and the lying liars who tell them,” as his 2003 bestseller would have it. –Kathleen C. In the closing paragraph of his 1996 review of Dragonheart, noted critic Roger Ebert summed up this adventurous fantasy quite nicely: “While no reasonable person over the age of 12 would presumably be able to take it seriously, there is nevertheless a lighthearted joy to it, a cheerfulness, an insouciance, that recalls the days when movies were content to be fun.” That’s precisely the quality that makes Dragonheart so appealing, despite the fact that it didn’t exactly take flight and breathe fire at the box office. The movie takes itself seriously without sacrificing the wit and cleverness that make it so entertaining. It’s about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (and voiced by Sean Connery), after they realize that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that’s a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the “Old Code” of honor with a ruthless reign of terror. As Ebert rightly noted, Dragonheart is no masterpiece, and its story (which was originally conceived as a darker, more serious drama) isn’t likely to capture everyone’s heart (dragon or otherwise). But it’s full of exciting action, witty dialogu, and gallant heroism, and in the presentation of a realistic talking dragon it’s a milestone in computer-generated special effects, far surpassing the breakthroughs of Jurassic Park three years earlier. –Jeff Shannon.
