Touted as “a movie about people who do stuff that is not normal,” Frank Zappa’s Baby Snakes chronicles a late-’70s Halloween stand in New York City (a zany enough proceeding in its own right) with digressions throughout the first half for backstage antics, band interviews, and some outlandish clay animation from Bruce Bickford, with whose work Zappa was obviously smitten. Onstage, Zappa is a live wire, the audience is appropriately rambunctious, and the band–an especially potent incarnation of the famous Mothers of Invention–is tight as could be. The film amounts to a three-hour musical carnival whose participants lack any trace of artistic or personal inhibition. Zappa, who died in 1993, always worked with consummate musicians, and Baby Snakes showcases the cream of the crop: Terry Bozzio (one of the greatest drummers ever to command a kit), bassist Patrick O’Hearn, keyboard wizard Tommy Mars, and even pop chameleon Adrian Belew.

The DVD packaging, with its deluxe miniature dossier on Zappa and the film, is fabulous, and the sound and picture seem about as good as they could be, under the influnce–that is, the circumstances. Undeniable are Zappa’s intelligence and charisma, which flicker and blaze every second he’s on screen. The progressive-leaning rock and jazz music is frequntly interrupted for meandering spoken interludes and is certainly not for all tastes. But Frank Zappa was a force to behold, and Baby Snakes offers a uniqu cultural education for anyone bold enough to give it a spin. “Without deviation,” Zappa wrote, “progress is not possible.” Baby Snakes is one of Frank’s most fervent contributions to progress. –Michael Mikesell

Mitzi Gaynor plays a charming fish-out-of-the-Hudson country bumpkin with a heart of gold, plopped into the guys-and-molls world of Damon Runyon’s Bloodhounds of Broadway. The film showcases the splendid talents, often underrated, of Gaynor as actress, singer, and, most importantly, dancer–high-stepping, tapping, and even contra-dancing her way across the screen with a winsome smile.

The script is pure Runyon, following some numbers-runners on the lam (one is even named “Numbers”), who end up in rural Georgia bewitched by the sweet innocence of Gaynor’s character, Emily Ann Stackerlee, bedecked in Dorothy Gale calico and curly pigtails. The dialogu around her is whizzing with Runyon-isms that pass blissfully over her naive head (”Madison Square Garden!” she exclaims, being told by the hustlers of the joys of Manhattan. “Do they grow beautiful things there?” “Yeah,” deadpans Numbers’ sidekick, “cauliflowers.”). A great throwaway line early in the film has a sweating con worrying about being “subpeeniya’d.” The appeal of the film is part wise-guy Runyon, and part captivating Gaynor, who doesn’t really belong in the underbelly world she’s drawn into, but shines nonetheless. Several song-and-dance bits will appeal to musicals fans, including the old-timey “Cindy,” and “Eighty Miles Outside of Atlanta.”

Extras are well worth the price of the DVD. There’s an informative documentary on Runyon, his newspaper career, and his self-invention as the chronicler of the side-of-the-mouth mutts of Times Square. And a latter-day interview with Gaynor is radiant; clearly having spent her life as a dancer has left its mark on her in her golden years, absolutely lovely and charming with great anecdotes and self-effacing yarns. There are also miniature versions of the original lobby cards. All are guaranteed to put you in a New York state of mind. –A.T. Hurley

They want a piece of the family fortune and will kill to get it. Patrick Wayne, the Duke’s own son, plays one of Big Jake’s kids, and together they start out after the boy’s abductors. Richard Boone makes a worthy adversary to Jake’s larger than life figure, and the final confrontation between the two contains some great gritted-teeth dialogu. Maureen O’Hara is barely in the feature, sharing the same fate as Bobby Vinton as the boy’s father. He seems to be onscreen just to get shot. –Keith Simanton

The 1950 Kill the Umpire stars William Bendix as Bill Johnson, a working man so enamored of America’s pastime that he regularly loses jobs because he can’t stay out of his favorite New York ballpark when he’s supposed to be at the office. Loudly disdainful of all umpires, Bill gets both a blessing and a comeuppance when his father-in-law (Ray Collins), a retired ump, sends him off to umpire school to learn the profession he deserves. After a lot of resistance, Bill understands the basic nobility of being the guy people love to hate despite also being necessary to baseball. The script is by Frank Tashlin, the animation director who would soon have better things to do in the 1950s and beyond, such as directing Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and guiding Jerry Lewis in some of his best vehicles. Indeed, Kill the Umpire, in many ways, looks like a collection of old cartoon gags connected by Bendix’s charming performance. But under the sure hand of seasoned director Lloyd Bacon (Knute Rockne All-American), it all comes together nicely.

The 1962 Safe at Home is built around the presence of New York Yankees stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, who prove stiff but game playing themselves in the story of a little boy who gets in trouble for overstating his friendship with them. Young Hutch Lawton (Bryan Russell), a motherless child trying hard to help his preoccupied dad (Don Collier) build a business, brags to his Little Leagu team that he knows Maris and Mantle, then sets out on a journey to talk the legendary sluggers into going back with him to meet the team. William Frawley (who also appears in Kill the Umpire) helps keep the pace going as the Yankees’ manager, and Patricia Barry is a welcome presence as Mr. Lawton’s love interest. –Tom Keogh
