Kathy Smith’s Step Workout is a splendid introduction to step for the novice, and a solid workout for intermediates. The main workout consists of three 12-minute, progressive step segments. Beginners do only the first, then fast-forward to the cool-down; intermediates do the first two; seasoned steppers may do all three. The beginning segment uses very simple moves repeated frequntly: the basic up-up-down-down, knee lifts, toe taps, leg curls, and leg lifts. The intermediate segment introduces more moves, still presented simply, and puts them together into simple combinations. It’s athletically more challenging, but not complicated. The advanced segment adds more strenuous moves such as straddles, lunges, and gentle propulsion moves. After the cool-down is an abdominal segment using the step as a slant board, and then a short upper-body sculpting segment starting with pushups and then using weights. At the end, a special teaching guide for novice steppers demonstrates the basics of stepping. Experienced steppers who like a lot of choreography will get bored quickly, but if you want the athleticism of step without complicated choreography, you’ll be happy here. Smith’s cuing and safety guidelines, as always, are excellent. –Joan Price

Charmed: The Complete Fourth Season is a captivating story of big changes in the world of the Halliwell sisters. San Francisco witches Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Piper (Holly Marie Combs) grieve the loss of Pru (Shannen Doherty) at the same time they discover the existence of a fourth Halliwell sibling: Paige (Rose McGowan), offspring of the girls’ late mother and a Whitelighter (thus making Paige part witch and part angel). Paige was raised as an adopted child, but has been aware of her sisters for awhile. Still, she’s ambivalent about joining forces with them (despite having two powers instead of the usual one), and Piper–now the oldest of the surviving sisters, reluctantly taking over Pru’s position as leader–is in no hurry to welcome Paige into the fold.

Blood and loyalty prevail, however, and soon Paige takes over Phoebe’s old role as screw-up rookie, mangling potions and causing havoc (such as switching bodies with Phoebe at an inopportune time). But her strong survival sense, compassion, and ability to read people (she’s studying to become a social worker) add a powerful new weapon to the Halliwell arsenal. Meanwhile, several key storylines from the third season carry over to this new year, notably the running drama concerning demon-with-a-soul Cole (Julian McMahon) and his ongoing battle to stay free of hell’s wrath while maintaining dark powers. His romance with Phoebe leads them to become ruler and qUn of the Underworld, where Phoebe’s loyalty is tested and a demonic baby enters the picture. Piper and her husband, Whitelighter Leo (Brian Krause), deal with sorrow over Pru and frustration over not being able to have a child, and the sisters’ police ally, Inspector Morris (Dorian Gregory), has to contend with an out-of-control boss bent on charging the Halliwells with a crime. All that and a witch-hunter and appearance by the angel of destiny, who offers to relieve the witches of their magical burden. The most impressive aspect of the fourth season is the way Doherty’s loss isn’t treated as a mere vacuum to be filled with a new body, but is taken as an opportunity to reinvent the show in several crucial ways. –Tom Keogh

Why is the career of Antonio Banderas so troubled? Because the man is unqustionably a movie star. Even in a movie like The Body–in which he plays a priest sent by the Vatican to investigate whether or not a skeleton found in a tomb in Jerusalem is in fact the bones of Jesus Christ, a movie that reduces complex qustions of faith and theology to plot points on a screenplay formula, a movie that manages to be simultaneously preposterous and mundane–even in a movie like this, Banderas is engaging. He’s phenomenally good-looking; he’s both intelligent and emotionally accessible; he’s funny and passionate; why have only genre pictures (such as The Mask of Zorro and Desperado) so far managed to capture his charm and warmth? His five films with exuberant Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Law of Desire, Matador, Labyrinth of Passion, and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) showed Banderas to be a versatile actor, capable of tackling sophisticated parts with both comic and serious edges. But Hollywood doesn’t seem to know what to do with him; it’s dismaying to think that the numerous duds that litter his filmography are actually the best choices he’s been offered. The Body is far from his worst film–the cinematography is superb, and though the script is trying to tackle religious and political issus far beyond its grasp, the dialogu is reasonably well written and the characters have some dimension to them–but why is an actor as sexy as Banderas being cast as a priest? Please, someone, give this man the roles he deserves! –Bret Fetzer
