That’s part of the lesson in this film, based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Sheila Ballantyne. Harvey Keitel is a 1950s widower with two daughters, played by Fairuza Balk and Elisabeth Moss. A guy with lots of dreams, a convincing line of patter, and very little to back up either, he hustles to keep his family together, doing what he feels is the best he can to keep food on the table on clothes on their backs. But his loneliness, his drinking–and, ultimately, his inability to be a square dealer with the business associates he’s cheating–contribute to his older daughter’s disillusionment. Strong performances by Keitel, who is surprisingly touching, and Balk, who captures the mood-swing roller coaster of adolescence, complicated by being forced to grow up before her time. –Marshall Fine

Through the grace of makeup, Jessie can pass for 16, and she tells Michael that’s her age when he gives her a ride home from class one week. They start to flirt. When Michael invites her to a band rehearsal, they kiss for the first time; when he invites her to a drive-in movie, things start moving just a little too fast, and Jessie has to quickly decide whether or not to confess. Sooner or Later is full of 1970s schmaltz–Michael’s songs sound like a cross between Electric Light Orchestra and the Starland Vocal Band–but it’s also an extremely well written and deftly acted coming-of-age story. Both leads are excellent and the supporting cast is full of smart character actors: Judd Hirsch, Barbara Feldon (better known as “99″ on Get Smart!), and Lynn Redgrave. What could be an overdone teen potboiler is given humor and realism; it treats young love seriously but with perspective, and without a trace of condescension. A truly charming and enjoyable film. –Bret Fetzer

Before his death, comedian Chris Farley made a pair of surprisingly successful comedies that teamed him with Saturday Night Live colleagu David Spade. Their relationship in each film was pretty much the same, but then so was Abbott and Costello’s or Laurel and Hardy’s (not that Farley and Spade are in their leagu). In Tommy Boy, Farley plays the ne’er-do-well son of a successful auto parts manufacturer (Brian Dennehy). When Dad drops dead just after marrying a young new wife, it’s up to Tommy (aided by sarcastic bean-counter Spade) to rescu the company by taking over for his father. Black Sheep features a slightly different plot: This time, Spade is hired by Farley’s brother (Tim Matheson), a candidate for governor, to keep Farley (an accident-prone buffoon) out of sight until after the election. Farley has a likable quality that is exploited by continuous slapstick centered on his clumsiness, both physically and socially. –Marshall Fine
